Assuming that most people renting a trailer have little experience, the following advice is provided for your safety and enjoyment:

Trailer loading advice For optimum handling the trailer must be properly loaded and balanced, storage within the car trailer rental must have such considerations. Keep center of gravity low, put 60% of weight to the front of the trailer and pay attention to loading the trailer from left to right (for even tire wear).

Acceleration and passing The extra weight of the trailer can affect the acceleration of the towing vehicle greatly, allow extra distance for acceleration and the extra length of the trailer. Overtaking is not recommended while towing a car trailer rental.

Reversing Use a second person as a guide to the rear of the vehicle if available, make smaller corrections instead of exaggerated ones. A slight movement on the steering wheel of the towing vehicle will result in much larger movement of the trailer.

Practice basic movements such as turning, reversing and braking in a closed area before travel if possible.

Braking Towing a car trailer rental will increase the distance needed to stop. Allow for this when driving, when approaching a stop 'lead' with the trailer brakes (if possible). For correcting trailer side sway, touch the trailer brakes for a moment without using vehicle brakes, and the trailer should settle down and track steadily again.

On the Journey After traveling 40-50 miles stop in a safe location and double check the following:

Trailer hitch attachment
Lights and electrical connections.
Tire pressure (of car trailer rental and towing vehicle)
Trailer wheel lug nuts for tightness.
Check engine oil and coolant level regularly. |
